A few weeks ago, a friend and I went to one of the last Magic the Gathering drafts for Return to Ravnica. I especially wanted to go, since, having attended the pre-release, the draft would be a wonderful way to close out the set.
In the first booster pack, I was greeted by Rakdos, Lord of Riots. Why yes, Mr. Rakdos Sir, I’ll certainly join your cult. I drafted red-black monsters and unleashed my Rakdos deck.
My first opponent was a man I’d seen often at Friday Night Magic. He was a cheery seasoned player, with a devastating pack of rats. I lost to his rodent army very quickly. Mr. Rakdos was disappointed.
My second opponent had unlucky draws. While I was ecstatic about summoning Mr. Rakdos to the battlefield, he died before Mr. Rakdos had a chance to strike.
My third and final opponent was a lady with an awesome accent and an awesome pink sweater. Moments before, I saw her amazing Selesnya deck dealing punches, so I was a little scared. Against me, she drew no creatures with populate. We sparred back and forth, before she ultimately finally won. After the game, she invited me to a meetup of the local Lady Planeswalker Society. That sounded super sweet. I might just go and check it out.
This Return to Ravnica draft was super fun, loads more so than my last draft. I think I’ve gotten slightly better, and might win a few more games next time!
Sound the trumpets!
The megalopolis is back!
One one fine weekend in September, a friend and I hiked far into uncharted lands for Magic’s Return to Ravnica pre-release event. We each pledged a guild. I applied for the Azorius Senate, beholder of justice and law. He joined the ranks of Rakdos, bringer of pain.
We played epic games nonstop till the late evening. Even though I didn’t fare as well as he did, I was able to summon my Utvara Hellkite in a couple of matches. It always brought me a smile watching my opponent quiver in its wake.
The pre-release was exceptionally fun. I saw a few of the people I’d met at Friday Night Magic, and was surprised by a long-ago friend attending as a referee. Magic events just keep on getting better.
My friends and I descended into the dungeon of that bookstore to find a legion of Planeswalkers. Excitement and conviviality was in the air.
We sat around long, mead-hall tables and cast our lot.
Rustle, rustle, pop.
Each of us drafted spells from Magic the Gathering booster packs.
When dueling time came, we sat among awesomely friendly folks and played epic games of Magic.
I just attended my first Friday Night Magic and it was awesome.
Despite being epically crushed in my first draft tournament, FNM turned out to be surprisingly fun.
My most pwned moment of the night was when my opponent switcherooed my Sentinel Spider and killed my own flying Primal Clay critter with it. Oof.
My friends fared far better than I. One of them almost went undefeated!
I’ll definitely planeswalk back again, especially once Magic returns to Ravnica.
