labelled reagent

I love it when I’m sharing a bench with another person, and they sign and date the reagents.  It’s like delving into a new code base and every method is thoughtfully named. It’s such a joy!

Pair benchwork is kinda great, just like pair programming. In a lab setting, it’s reserved for training purposes since benchwork is more protocol than design decisions. Though, it still benefits from a navigator looking ahead and observing techniques.

pair benchwork

Alex and I paired on transfections a couple weeks ago. He was reviewing sterile techniques with me and I learned a lot.

Maybe I should pair with other members of the lab, just to see their technique styles. My personal style is to use a checklist for everything. If I’m doing a large number of PCRs or plasmid constructions, there’s no way I’d remember if a specific reaction got all its components without writing it down.

Anyhoo, pairing is great! Do more technique exchanges!
